How to Replace the Fixed Optical Drive
On Your Dell C-Series Notebook

These instructions apply to the Dell Inspiron 8000, 8100, 8200 and the Dell Latitude C800, C810 and C840.
These instructions should also apply to the Inspiron 4000, 4100, 4150 and the Latitude C500, C510, C600, C610 and C640.

NOTE: Before you begin, disconnect the computer and attached devices from electrical outlets and remove any installed batteries. To avoid ESD, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap. Doing this will prevent you from damaging your computer.

Removing the Fixed Optical Drive

Turn the computer so that the bottom of the computer is facing up.

Loosen the captive screw that secures the CDROM or DVD drive.

Note: This does not come out all the way.

With the computer still upside down, pull out the pull tab and use the pull tab to remove the fixed optical drive.

When pulling the optical drive out, sometimes the optical drive will catch on the plastic case of the notebook. If this happens, you can use a small flat blade screwdrive to help keep the notebook case off of the optical drive.

DO NOT FORCE THE DRIVE OUT! It should come out easily.

Depending the optical drive that you purchased, the front bezel may or may not fit the contour of your notebook.

If this is the case, you may be able to remove the front bezel from the old drive and put it on the new one. Notice, I said MAY. There are many after market suppliers and each may be different.

To remove the front bezel, open the optical drive by using a paper clip. Insert the paper clip into the small hole and gently apply pressure to the paper clip. The drawer should pop out allowing you to open the drive.

NOTE: Do not touch the optics on the drive. By doing so, it can damage the drive or at least degrade the ability to work.

Turn the optical drive upside down.

Start to detach the front bezel by gently pushing down on the tab to release it. Then gently pull on the front bezel so that the tab is totally exposed.

There is another tab on the opposite side that needs to be released. Gently push down on this tab until it releases and pull on the front bezel until the tab is exposed.

There are two other tabs, marked 2 and 3, that will release when you pull on the front bezel. Remember to do this gently. If it doesn't come off easily, something has not been released.

To replace the fixed optical drive, just reverse the instructions.

  1. Remove the bezel from the new drive if needed and replace it with the original.
  2. Slide the new optical drive into the notebook.
  3. Push the pull tab into place.
  4. Tighten the captive screw.
