How to Install a HDD in a "D" Series Media Bay Carrier

The Media Bay Carrier shown here is for the I600m, I8500, I8600, I9100 and the Latitude "D" series notebooks . The part number for this media bay carrier is 4P124. Note: you can use only a 9.5mm hard drive. The 4P124 Media Bay Carrier cannot handle a 12.5mm drive, even if the thin pads on the cover are removed. You will also need to order the following screws:

Qty: 5 - Part Number: 7M490 - Description: Screw,M2.5X4,Phillips Head, Machine Screw,Nickel Plated, Nylok
Qty: 4 - Part Number: 5X488 - Description: Screw, M3X3, KSH, MS, BLO

The way the D-series modular HDD adapter is set up it can use 9 screws. There are a total of 5 screws (7M490) on the top side of the carrier that fasten the cover to the base. There are also 4 screw holes in the bottom that go through the carrier and into 4 holes in the bottom (green side) of the HDD itself. These 4 screws (5X488) are completely optional however as the HDD is held in place very securely without them. To see where they are used, look at the instructions below

A special thanks goes out to Dell Community Member CECarl for supplying these pictures of the hard drive media bay carrier.

This is how you will received the Media Bay Carrier. Shown is the 4P124. Notice that the five screws that hold the two parts together are not there. The media bay requires five screws, These screws are 2.5mm x 5mm phillips head screws. They MUST be purchased separately and are not shown. This is looking at the module from the top.

This is a view of the bottom of the module. There are also 4 screw holes in the bottom that go through the carrier and into 4 holes in the bottom (green side) of the HDD itself. These 4 screws are completely optional however as the HDD is held in place very securely without them. They MUST be purchased separately and are not shown.

Carefully, separate the top and bottom half's. This module can only use the 9.5mm hard drive. Even if you remove the 6 pads (shown in the picture), you still can not use a 12.5mm hard drive.

Here is a view of the inside of the module showing the hard disk connector that will hook up to the pins on the hard drive.

The easiest way to install the hard drive is to hold it vertically and carefully align the pins on the hard drive with the connector and then firmly press down until the drive is fully seated. Take extra care to not bend the pins on the hard drive.

Then carefully rotate the hard drive into a horizontal position and place it in the hard drive media bay carrier. Do not damage or crimp the ribbon cable.

Notice that when installed properly, you can not see the green circuit board of the hard drive.

There will be four pins on the hard drive that are not used. These are only used if you had to identify the hard drive as a Master/Slave. For the Inspiron and Latitude computers, this is not necessary.

Now, place the top half of the Media Bay Carrier onto the bottom half and install the five screws.
