The 4169D is for the 12.5mm drives and the 29MFN is for the 9.5mm drives. The two media bay devices are actually the same thing with one difference. The 29MFN has inserts in it to take up the extra space. By removing the inserts in the 29MFN, it can accept the 12.5mm hard drives.

To order these parts from Dell, you must call Dell Spare Parts USA at 1-800-357-3355 ext. 69937 or 1-800-449-3355 ext. 69937 or 1-800-624-9896, select option 2, then 2, then 4. One of these numbers should work for you. Dell Spare Parts Canada - 1-866-440-3355

This is how you will received the Media Bay Carrier. Shown is the 4169D. Notice that the four screws that hold the two parts together are not there. The four screws, Part# 53965 description-SCR,M2.6X5PHH,LP,BC5, MUST be ordered separately and are not shown. NOTE: you must order a quantity of 4 screws. The part number 53965 is for a quantity of one.

There is an alternate device that you can buy that will do the same thing as the 29MFN. It is sold by Origin Storage Solutions. I do not have any detailed pictures available to show how to install it. Origin has a US and UK presence. The part number is FK-DELL-2BAY. Click HERE to see a picture of it. Dell Community Member ollyevans got one of these and has reported back to us that it works.

Carefully, separate the top and bottom half's.
Here is a better view of the bottom half of the Media Bay Carrier.

A view of the hard drive before it is installed. In this picture, you are looking at the top of the hard drive. The hard drive pictured is a IBM Travelstar 30GN 07N6713 20GB - 9.5mm.

Click here to see a close up of the connector that hooks to the pins on the hard drive. You grab the connector, bend it to the left gently, and hook it carefully onto the drive's pins.

Insert the hard drive into the Media Bay Carrier upside down. Notice that when installed properly, you can see the green circuit board of the hard drive.

Connect the cable to the hard drive. Be careful not to bend the pins on the hard drive or to damage the ribbon cable. There will be four pins on the hard drive that are not used. These are only used if you had to identify the hard drive as a Master/Slave. For the Inspiron and Latitude computers, this is not necessary.

Now, place the top half of the Media Bay Carrier onto the bottom half and install the four screws.
